Frank Kimbrough

Frank Kimbrough Marshall ( born November 2, 1956 in Roxboro, North Carolina) is a pianist of modern jazz, which is being brought by Allmusic because of its individual style of play.

Life and work

Kimbrough comes from a musical family; having already four years old began playing the piano, he received from the age of seven piano lessons. Having first played in churches and with local groups, he moved in 1980 to Washington, DC, where he led his own trio and performed with Webster Young and Buck Hill. The following year he settled in New York City, where he published his first album (still on Cassette) 1986. In 1992, he was with Ben Allison founding member of the Jazz Composers Collective. In addition to Allison, he headed since 1994 The Herbie Nichols Project. Except with his trio, he also appeared with his band noumena, which included Ben Monder, Scott Robinson and Tony Moreno; In 2008 he published with Air a solo album. From 1990, he worked with Ted Nash. Kimbrough also played with Paul Murphy and Kendra Shank. Since 1994, he also belongs to the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. In 2011 he worked at Ryan True Dells Centennial - with Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans.

Kimbrough teaches at New York University. In 1985, he won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition.
