Frank Mantek

Frank Mantek ( born January 20, 1959 in Jena ) is a former weightlifter and the current sports director of the Association of German weightlifter.

Sports career

Manteks first international competition was at the age of 21 years, the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, which, as was customary, at the same time represented the World Championships this year. Here he won the Olympic bronze medal in single combat in the Middle Heavyweight 90 kg with a capacity of 370.0 kg ( 165.0 / 205.0 kg ). After David Rigert after three invalid tensile tests with 170.0 kg was eliminated from the competition, and Rolf Milsner could not attend because of the boycott of the Western States, two of the actual title favorites were already switched off in this weight class.

At the World Championships in 1981 in Lille, he was able to bring a valid attempt at bumping and thus remained unplaced after 165.0 kg in the snatch. 1982 in Ljubljana, he could win with 377.5 kg ( 170.0 / 207.5 kg ) in single combat the bronze medal. The winner was Blagoj Blagoev with 415.0 kg before Jurik Wardanjan with 395.0 kg.

His last international match played Mantek 1983 at the World Championships in Moscow, but he had to finish unplaced again. At the age of 25 years Mantek ended his career due to shoulder injury.

Career as a coach

  • Mantek is (as of July 2010) Since 1990, national coach of the men of the Federal Association of German weightlifter. Among other things, he led Matthias Steiner 2008 Olympic gold in the super heavyweight division.
