Frank Michael Beyer

Frank Michael Beyer ( born March 8, 1928 in Berlin, † April 20, 2008 ) was a German composer and exponent of the New Music.

Life

Beyer was born as the son of the writer and art historian Oskar Beyer and his wife Margaret, née Lowenfeld, in Berlin. He spent his childhood in Dresden, Crete, Athens and Liechtenstein. He studied from 1946 to 1949 composition and church music at the School of Church Music in Berlin. In the period 1950-1953 Piano studies followed in Leipzig.

Beyer continued his composition studies continued in Berlin with Ernst Pepping and " virtuosic organ playing " with Joseph Ahrens at the Academy of Music in Berlin ( now University of the Arts Berlin). Johann S. Bach and the Viennese School, most notably Anton Webern, the composer are the largest influence on the development Beyers. The example of his parents' house in dealing with music was also of great importance. He learned in his childhood already know the music of Bach; his father published in the 1920s in Berlin furrow publishing a book on Bach.

Beyer was from 1950 to 1963 worked as a church musician, both as a concert organ performer and conductor. He has taught as a lecturer at the School of Church Music in Berlin, and later at the Academy of Music. From 1968 to 1993 he was professor of composition at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. In 1964 he initiated the series " Musica sacra nova ". From 1970 to 1985 Beyer was the lead member of the Berlin Bach - days. Between 1986 and 2003 he held the position as Director of Music at the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1990 he initiated the Institute for New Music at the University of Arts Berlin and the Berlin orchestra conference, which he headed then. From 1986 to 2006 he was a member of the Senate of the Academy of Arts.

Beyer was also represented ( Society for musical performing and mechanical reproduction rights ) on the board of GEMA.
