Frank Shorter

Frank Shorter ( born October 31, 1947 in Munich) is a former American long-distance runner and Olympic champion.

Shorter was the dominant marathon runner of the early 1970s and won from 1970 to 1973 four times in a row, the Fukuoka Marathon. In a marathon run of the 1972 Summer Olympics in his hometown of Munich, he already broke away on the first half of the course from the rest of the field and won with over two minutes ahead of the gold medal.

With his finish him a student stole the show, who overcame the barriers with self- painted start number and broke in just before him into the stadium, where he was held for the leading runners of the audience first, to led him away by the security forces at the time, as Shorter into broke in the stadium.

At the games in Montreal in 1976 to Shorter had just defeated Waldemar Cierpinski and won the silver medal.
