Frank Udvari

Frank Udvari ( born January 2, 1924) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey referee.

Life

Frank Udvari, who was born in Yugoslavia, but in Kitchener, Ontario, grew up, played during his youth baseball. In 1948, he became coach of a junior team and then began a career as a referee. In 1951 he directed his first games in the American Hockey League. In his first two years he had to deal with controversial decisions and in several games he lost control of the game play, but few years later Udvari rose to one of the best referees and also came often in the National Hockey League action. In 1966, he ended his career as a referee and was superior of the NHL referee. On December 30, 1978, he returned for a game again as a referee in the NHL back, as Dave Newell had suffered an injury and the game could no longer continue.

In 1973, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
