Franken (Haut-Rhin)

Franken is a commune with 350 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Vallée de dog Bach.

Geography

Franken located 17 kilometers west of Basel between Jettingen and dog stream. To the north of the village center runs the department road D419. Through the village flows the valley creek, a right tributary of the River Ill.

History

The town's name suggests a settlement of Franks in the Alemannic region in the Middle Ages. An original church was first mentioned in 1144, it belonged to the parish of dog Bach. Franken was then called Franchon. In 1194 it was mentioned in another document as Francon.

Attractions

The present church Saint -Georges in Franconia was built in 1729. In the new buildings of the old building were used as the portal of the sacristy and the side door of the nave, on the lintel, the year 1701 is engraved. In the 19th and 20th century restoration work was carried out.

Today's water mill was built in the second half of the 18th century. An original mill was first mentioned in 1629. Until 1931 the mill was owned by the same family of millers. Then it was abandoned. It is in very poor condition.

The main economic activities are agriculture in Franconia and the breeding of domestic cattle and hogs.
