Geography

Location

Frankenau located in the basement Forest southwest of Mount Talgang. It is located on the southern edge of the National Park basement Edersee at the origin and the headwaters of the Eder- inflow Lorfe ( Lorfebach ).

Climate

History

The emergence of Frankenau and the neighboring town of Frankenberg probably goes back to the Frankish period. The colonization of the area was carried out by the Chatti. The actual place Frankenau to have been built as a stronghold against the Saxons. Assumptions are based on a foundation around 500 AD and 750 AD from. City rights were granted Frankenau probably in 1242 by Heinrich Raspe, Landgrave of Thuringia. The oldest existing certificate of Frankenau was issued on April 4, 1266 by Landgrave Henry I and includes the confirmation of city status.

Frankenau was for centuries a poor farming community town. A particularly heavy blow befell the inhabitants on 22 April 1865, when almost the entire city one was destroyed by fire. Due to the enormous contributions of the former inhabitants of the city could be rebuilt.

Jewish Community

Jewish residents are first documented in 1659, as a " protective Jew " with two family members is expressed. 1671 is then a second Jewish family reported at the site. In the 18th century began a gradual growth, and 1785 are called the seven " protected Jews ". The Jewish community was never very large: it reached 70 people and 7.1% of the total population of 980 in 1905 peaked. The small community had a synagogue, a Jewish school, a ritual bath and a cemetery. The synagogue was built in 1867, after the great fire of 1865.

1933 lived 65 Jewish residents in the city. Thereafter, their number increased by depopulation and emigration quickly. The last family came forward on March 28, 1939, from Frankenau. In 1938 it was clear that a Kehillah for the holding of religious services would not soon come together, and in the spring or summer of 1938, the synagogue was sold to a neighbor. Because of sponge infestation, the building was finally demolished. The base with the basement room was still available in 1949. On the plot ( Riesch Road 6) a new building was erected later.

On 17 June 1992 at the 750th anniversary of the granting of town rights, was at the land border between the former synagogue and the Protestant church erected a memorial to the murdered and expelled Jewish residents.

Incorporations

On February 1, 1971, until then independent municipality Allendorf was incorporated in Frankenau. On December 31, 1971, added Louis village. Altenlotheim and Ellershausen followed on 1 July 1972. The series of incorporations was completed with the inclusion of Dainrode on 1 January 1974.
