The subway station at the main station of Frankfurt am Main, is a subterranean, four-track S-Bahn station and next to the main railway station and Konstablerwache one of the central nodes in the network of S- Bahn Rhein -Main. He offers except for regional and long-distance transport in the station hall also interchanges with the network of subway and tram Frankfurt am Main.

Location

The subway station is located under the northern part of the reception building of the Frankfurt central station and its forecourt Am Hauptbahnhof. This area belongs mainly to the district Gallus, west of downtown. The station is part of the City Tunnel through downtown. This tunnel starts just before the main station in the track field and extends to the east on the railway station district toward the financial district. Am Hauptbahnhof all S -Bahn lines come together from the west and north of the Rhine -Main area and bundled out from here through the city center. Is the the same time built Hauptbahnhof Underground Station on the S-Bahn station.

The station is located 20 m below the main train station. The depth of the station was partially through the underpass of the harbor road tunnels and the subway below the station forecourt. To the north close to the platforms first a turnout area where the (later three) tunnels passes in first four, which are performed in three to 39 per thousand steep ramps into the track leading up to the main train station. To the south, a 160 m long track switches follows, in which the four platform tracks are merged into two track rails (in two single-track tunnels ).

Architecture

The subway station is made of wide and 210 m long island platform. The base architecture is designed sober and modern in clear contrast to the historicizing reception building. In the S-Bahn station dominated by 2013 with orange tile -clad columns and white wall and ceiling coverings. The ceiling panel was removed from fire safety reasons. On the wall coverings an orange band was mounted at mid-height. This was alternately of large-format line networks and circles ( also orange), each of which contains a shield with the station name was interrupted. The signs were partially replaced by newer ones in the typical station sign - blue and the Zuganzeigetafeln completely renewed. Since 2013, the S-Bahn underground station is being renovated and will receive new ceiling and pillar trim.

Both platforms feature two entrances, one of which opens every four long escalators in the shopping arcade ("B - level ") under the station forecourt, while the other - also with four escalators - through an intermediate level with timetables and ticket machines in the platform halls leads. At the eastern end of the platform, a connecting corridor to the metro station connects to, which also has two platforms. The subway station itself is otherwise only accessible via two entrances of the B- level. The two S -Bahn platforms are also connected in the western area on escalators.

Of the two platforms each have a lift into the concourse in front of all aerial platforms and the station forecourt are achieved. The subway has an elevator from the station forecourt in the B-level and from there be taken in one of the two underground walkways another.

History

In the early 1960s there were early plans, the guard - the center of the city - to bind to the west central station. 1962 decided the city of Frankfurt in cooperation with the German Federal Railroad planning a so-called junction line - also called V -Bahn.

On January 20, 1969, the then Federal Transport Minister Georg Leber opened in the main station, construction of the first building phase of the S- Bahn Rhein -Main. The construction work at the main station was started in 1971. The S-Bahn station, together with the underground station and a common shopping mall - built in an open design - the B- level. For this, the north wing of the reception building was dismantled and stored the original stones, and the landmarked building was built after the completion of the low station again. As part of the construction site and the parking garage of the main railway station was built.

After nine years of construction, the S-Bahn station was opened together with the first part of the City Tunnel to the main guard station on 28 May 1978. The same day, the opening of the extension of the metro line B was held by one station to the central station.

Operation

The S-Bahn station has two island platforms on with two tracks for the two directions of travel. In order to distinguish the tracks in the underground from the one-or two -digit track numbers in the station hall, the four tracks is a 10 prefixed. Thus, three-digit track numbers result. On the south platform with the tracks 101 and 102 by the trains to the city center, while run on the northern tracks 103 and 104 trains out of the city towards the airport, maximum and Westbahnhof.

It is envisaged that the outer tracks 101 and 104 during normal operation usually from the S -Bahn lines S3 - S6, which according to the exit from the City Tunnel on the route of Homburger Bahn (parallel to the Main- Weser Railway ) turn, and the inner rails 102 and 103 are used by the rest of the lines S1, S2, S8 and S9, the drive on the track ahead of the train station straight ahead. Technically, however, the station provides a high flexibility and it is arbitrary, of which track is navigated by which line. Often it is therefore also possible to deviate from this rule, as occurs, for example, the announcement of the exit page in the S-Bahn station is separated from the announcement until just before entering the station. The two inner tracks are also equipped so that they can be ridden in both directions of travel. As a result, in case of failure (accidents on one of the tracks, switches disorders, etc.), the operation will be continued.

To speed up the transfers from one island platform to the other, exists in addition to the normal access nor a direct connection between the tracks 101/102 and 103 / 104. This transfer has per island platform on only an escalator, which are connected so that they can be used when changing from track 101/102 to 103/104, which also corresponds with the main stream there changing coaches. This transfer is not knowledgeable local travelers often misinterpreted as output, which always leads to confusion. Another transition at the western end of the platform was closed and now serves only as an emergency exit. Structurally, this transition was designed so that a connection to the pedestrian tunnel that runs under the tracks of the main station, would have been possible. This variant was never implemented.
