The Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main, in its present form was created on August 1, 1971 by the union of various predecessor institutions, such as the Higher Technical School of Social Work, the State Higher business school (HWS ) and Interstate engineering schools.

Merging of the departments

1995 attracted the Department of Economics and 1998, the social divisions of the North West town on the Nibelungenplatz. As part of the steps of a reform process, the university has established basic goals and given a new organizational structure. With effect from 1 July 2001 it was decided to combine the then thirteen departments to four subject areas:

  • The departments of A = Architecture, Civil Engineering and B = G = Geodesy = Surveying go back to the Founded in 1908, Royal Baugewerkschule for civil engineering.
  • The departments of Electrical Engineering E =, F = precision engineering, mechanical engineering and M = V = process technology go back to the state, founded in 1920 united engineering schools.
  • The Department of Social P = goes back to the Founded in 1954, Urban Youth Leaders Seminar.
  • The Department of S = social work goes back to 1944, founded the State-approved Women's School of Public Care.
  • The Department of W = economy finally emerged from the company founded in 1966 national higher business school.
  • The departments MND = mathematics and science and
  • SuK = Social and Cultural Studies have been first created with the establishment of the University of Applied Sciences 1971; they had not initially own students, but were pure service departments, especially for the students of engineering faculties.
  • As the 13th Division in 1993 yet added C = Care = care and health.

These 13 departments were spread over two locations:

  • Nibelungenplatz: On the one hand Kleiststrasse in the old building of the " State School " were the subject areas A, B, G and SuK, on the other hand, in the old " engineering school " the specialist areas E, F, M, V and MND. The two sides Kleiststrasse were mentally scarcely less far apart than the Nibelungenplatz and the North West town.
  • Northwest City: social pedagogy, social work, nursing and business.

Merger talks with the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden

The President of the University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main and the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden agreed in September 2005, the Strategic Partnership of Universities of Applied Sciences Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. This was due to the changes in the German higher education system ( Bachelor / Master) and the resulting growing competition between colleges, universities and vocational colleges. On September 14, 2007, established by the President control group presented an issues paper for the merger of the two universities as Hochschule Rhein Main - University of Applied Sciences ago. On 12 December 2007, the merger was soundly rejected by the Senate of the University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main, although before the Senate of the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden had agreed to this.
