Frankie Campbell

Frankie Campbell ( * 1904 as Francisco Camilli in Hibbing, Minnesota, † August 25 1930 in San Francisco) was an American professional boxer of Italian descent.

Death due to boxing match

Campbell played his last fight on August 25, 1930 in San Francisco against the eventual world champion Max Baer. After Campbell very hard blows had to put in the 5th round, he collapsed. Already in the boxing ring doctors over 30 minutes present tried in vain to revive Frankie Campbell, but he died a few hours later in hospital to a skull -brain trauma. The referee of the fight was later accused of not having terminated the fight in time, itself already unconscious when Campbell was hanging on the ropes. He was suspended. Max Baer seriously considered after the death to stop boxing. As a result, he supported the bereaved Campbells financially, so he paid, inter alia, for training its children.
