Frankie Gavin (boxer)

Frankie Raymond Gavin (born 28 September 1983) is an English boxer. He was 2007 World Champion Amateur at lightweight.

Career

Frankie Gavin is from Birmingham and began as a teenager with the boxes. He is a member of the boxing club ABC Hall Green Birmingham and visited in his home town, the Catholic Technology College. The southpaw is grown together with the silver medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Amir Khan at his club and trained today with this, although Amir Khan has now become a professional boxer.

Frankie Gavin recorded his first international success at the Junior European Championships 2003. He finished there in the lightweight third place. He was first in 2005 English champion ( ABA champion ) at lightweight. This title he repeated in 2007 with a points victory over Thomas Stalker ( 20:7 ). 2005 Frankie Gavin won Liverpool the British - 4-Nations Cup with victories over point Mitch Prince, Scotland ( 19:8 ) and Peter Ashton, Wales ( 18:14 ).

In 2006 he was at the European Championships in Plovdiv at lightweight at the start. He won there in the first round over Semion Alamanii from Moldova by demolition in the third round and defeated in the second round Selcuk Aydin from Turkey by disqualification in the third round. In the quarterfinals, he lost to the Ukrainian Alexander Kljutschko by points ( 26:40 ). He therefore came at this European Championship together with three other boxers to fifth place. Much more successful he was with the Commonwealth Games 2006 in Melbourne. He won there over Ovidiu Bobîrnat from Cyprus and Jai Baghwan from India to points, hit Rasheed Lawal from Nigeria and Leonardo Zappavigna from Australia respectively by demolition in the third round and won in the final over Giovanni Frontini from Mauritius on points clear again ( 23:9 ).

At the 2007 World Championships in Chicago Gavin surprisingly won the world title at lightweight. In all six battles he had to deny that he was from the beginning the dominant man and his victories were all clear and unambiguous. He triumphed over Omar Ward from Barbados by demolition in the third round and Merei Akschalow, Kazakhstan ( 20:9 ), Ramal Amanow, Azerbaijan ( 21:10 ), Onur Sipal, Turkey ( 16:7 ), the Olympic champion from 2004, Alexei Tishchenko of Russia ( 19:10), and in the final over Domenico Valentino from Italy ( 18:10 ) each clearly on points.

In the championship of the European Union in the Polish Cetniewo Frankie Gavin won the Light Welterweight among others in the quarterfinals of the German starter Slava Kerber on points (16:9).

Beginning of August 2008 was Frankie Gavin known his start waiving at the Olympic Games in Beijing, because he could not reach the weight limit in the light weight of 60 kg.

Professional career

Gavin was in February 2009, his entry as a professional and has been in September 2010 Irish champion in the light welterweight division. Due to a points victory against Young Mutley (balance sheet: 29-5 ), it was May 21, 2011 Intercontinental Champion WBO welterweight. On November 1, 2012, he won by unanimous decision against Junior Witter ( 41-5 ), and thus became British champion in the welterweight division.
