Franklin County (Alabama)

Franklin County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. In 2000, the County had 31 223 inhabitants and a population density of 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Russellville. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Alabama, on the west by the Mississippi and has an area of ​​1674 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers of water surfaces. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Colbert County, Lawrence County, Winston County and Marion County.

History

Franklin County was formed on February 6, 1818. It was named after the President of Benjamin Franklin. The first county seat was Russellville, named after William Russell, an early settler and Chief Scout of General Andrew Jackson during the Indian war of 1813 and 1814. In 1849, Frankfort was elected to the district capital and in 1879 it was Belgreen. After 1890, the courthouse was built there burnt down to the ground, 1891 Russellville was back to the district capital.
