Franklin County (Vermont)

Franklin County is a county located in the state of Vermont in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in St. Albans.

Geography

The County is bordered on the north by Canada and has an area of 1792 square kilometers, of which 142 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Orleans County, Lamoille County, Chittenden County, Grand Isle County and Brome - Missisquoi ( Canada).

History

Franklin County was formed on November 5, 1792 from parts of Chittenden County.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 45 417 people in the county. There were 16,765 households, and 12,188 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.06 % White, 0.30 % African American, 1.51 % Native American, 0.26 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.21 % percent from other ethnic groups; 1.64% were descended from two or more races. 0.59 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 16,765 households out of which 37.70 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.40 % were married couples living together, 9.90% had a female householder with no husband. 27.30 % were non-families. 20.60% of all households and 8.40% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.08.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 28.10 % under the age of 18, 7.00 % from 18 to 24, 31.40% from 25 to 44 years, 22.50% between 45 and 64 years and 11.00% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.50 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.90 males.

The median income for a household was $ 41,659, and the median income for a family was $ 46,733. Males had a median income of $ 32,009, women $ 24,078. The per capita income was $ 17,816. 9.00% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. 10.40 % of those under age 18 and 10.30% were 65 years or older.

Cities and Towns

In addition to the independent communities listed below exist in Franklin County, two villages that do not have their own administration and are managed by the respective associated towns: Enosburg Falls and Swanton Village.
