Franklin District

The Franklin District is located on the North Island of New Zealand. Administrative headquarters of lying in the two regions, Auckland and Waikato district is the city Pukekohe.

Geography

Like many other counties is also the Franklin district in several regions, the northern part in the Auckland region and the southern in the Waikato region. In the north, bordering on even the first members of the Auckland metropolitan districts, namely the Papakura District and the city district of Manukau. The entire southern border of the Franklin District shares with the Waikato district.

In the east, the area borders to the Hauraki Gulf, and thus to the Firth of Thames. Also bordered to the west the district of water, namely the Tasman Sea. At Port Waikato is the mouth of New Zealand's longest river, the Waikato River. Through the Manukau Harbour, the sixth largest natural harbor in the world, the district is separated in the northwest of the city district of Waitakere. The western straits of this natural harbor is formed from the south with the Awhitu Peninsula. While the West and especially the south is dominated by the fertile plains of the Waikato Plains prevails in the eastern hilly terrain around the Hunua Ranges, which serve as the main drinking water reservoir Auckland, before.

Population

The administrative headquarters of the district, Pukekohe, with 21,500 inhabitants ( 2005) also by far the largest town in the district. Other smaller towns are Waiuku, Tuakau or Glenbrook. Economy and infrastructure

The two most important economic sectors are agriculture in the plain to the west of the area and the tourism, especially on the beaches of the west coast. The district is well connected by State Highway 1 (SH 1) to the Straßenvehr as well as with the Overlander between Auckland and Wellington and by local trains from Auckland well to the trains.
