Franklin, also known as "the Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World" (translated: World capital of fluorescent minerals), is a town in Sussex County of New Jersey on the east coast of the United States.

History

Franklin was founded about 1600 as a mining settlement near the " Mine Franklin " also known as " Franklin stove " known. As the area is located on a very mineral-rich ore body, more mines and later smelters were operated in the area around Franklin and near the Wallkill River. Mined and processed was especially iron and zinc. In 1897, all mines united around Franklin for "New Jersey Zinc Company " - later renamed Horsehead Corporation - which became the largest employer in Franklin and even immigrants from Russia, Great Britain, Hungary and Poland attracted. 1966 was the Horsehead Corporation on in the Gulf Western ( Gulf and Western Industries, Inc ).

Since the beginning of mining over 250 minerals and mineral varieties were found in the mining area to Franklin, many of them fluorescent.

For the minerals Bannisterit, Bementite, Bostwickit, Bustamite, Cahnit, Charlesit, Chlorophoenicit, Cianciulliit, Klinoedrit, epidote - (Pb), Esperit, Feitknechtit, Franklinite, Franklinphilit, Gageit ( and Gageit -2M ), Glaukochroit, hardystonite, Hendricksit, Hodgkinsonit, Holdenit, Jarosewichit, Jerrygibbsit, Johannsenite, Johnbaumit, Kittatinnyit, Larsenit, Lennilenapeit, Leukophönicit, Loseyit, Magnesiochlorophönicit, Margarosanit, Marsturit, Minehillit, Nasonit, Nelenit, Petedunnit, Roeblingit, Roweite, Samfowlerit, Schallerit, Sclarit, Sussexite, Turneaureit, Wawayandait, Yeatmanit and zincite also shall be the place as type locality.
