Even in his youth interested Frans nature and he dealt with the plant sociology. His study was strongly affected by the Second World War. During this time he also met Charlotte AM Corporaal, whom he married in 1947. After graduation, he worked on the systematics of the family of Vochysiaceae. His doctoral work was the monograph by Vochysia, a neotropical genus of flowering plants.

After that he did not go to the University of Leiden, where they wanted to hire him for the project of Flora Malesiana, but to the University of Utrecht to Joseph Lanjouw ( 1902 to 1984 ). He was hired here for the International Association for Plant Taxonomy ( IAPT ). From then on, he dealt less with the plants themselves than with the botanists and their works. Today, this organization awards every three years Stafleu Medal for outstanding work for historical, bibliographical and / or nomenclatural aspects of plant systematics.

For decades he served as editor of the driving force in the new journal taxon that has been the leading magazine for systematic botany under him. At the same time he founded the series Regnum vegetable, within, among others, the index Herbariorum, a list of herbaria around the world and working there is botanists published. She came so far last in 1990 in the 8th edition out. In this series, lists all collectors of plants were created ( Regnum Vegetable Volume 2, 9, 86, 93, 109, 114, 117). Next, the project index nominum genericorum started with him, in which all genera of plants valid published are listed with publication and type species. This essential steps to the future stability of the plant names have been achieved. At the same time he prepared in the journal Taxon before various International Congresses botanist, so there the necessary decisions on the clarity of the International Code of Nomenclature of plants were created. But his most important work was the seven -volume Taxonomic Literature: A Selective Guide to Botanical Publications and Collections, with Dates, Commentaries, and Types (2nd edition), which he edited with Richard S. Cowan. In it are drawn with their biographies and the exact publication dates of their works all the major systematic botanist.
