Franz Anton Ries

Franz Anton Xavier Ries ( born November 10, 1755 in Bonn, † November 1, 1846 ) was a German violinist and orchestra leader.

Life

As a violinist, was a pupil of his father Johann Ries ( 1723-84, member of the Electoral Cologne orchestra in Bonn since 1747 ) and Johann Peter Salomon. He was a child prodigy on his instrument and got a job in 1774 at the Bonn court orchestra. After returning from a study trip to Vienna, he was in 1779 for "first violinist " and 1791 ( in the wake of the diseased Joseph Reicha ) for " director of the royal music " promoted. He was a member of the court orchestra at until its dissolution in 1794 and organized then occasionally with the remaining in Bonn musicians concerts.

In the years 1785/86 he taught Ludwig van Beethoven in the violin and stayed with Beethoven in a friendly connection.

He belonged to the Illuminati in Bonn and, after its dissolution, the Bonn Reading Society. The first Beethoven Festival of 1845 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bonn given and received on the occasion of his 90th birthday with the Red Eagle Order.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, founded in 1805 in Bonn Les frères courageux.

Teacher of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johanna Kinkel

Franz Xavier Ries lived in Bonn against Ludwig van Beethoven's birthplace with his grandfather in a house. The young Ludwig, he gave violin lessons, and eventually played with him in the court orchestra.

An equally prominent pupil of Ries was Johanna Kinkel.

Family

Franz Anton Ries was the father of Ferdinand and Hubert Ries, both also talented musicians.

The grave of Franz Anton Ries is located at the old cemetery in Bonn.
