Franz Grill

Franz Grill ( probably * 1756, † August 18 1792 in Sopron ) was an Austrian composer.

Life

Although Franz Grill was recognized as a composer of piano and chamber music in the late 18th century, certainly, is very little known about his life. While his background and his exact date of birth to date could not be determined, it is clear since the discovery of the entry in the Sterbematriken of St. George's Church in Sopron that on 18 August 1792, he at the age of 36 as " stately valet " of art and music patron, Count Ferenc Széchenyi (1754-1820), the founder of the Hungarian National Museum and Hungarian National library, died. This grill had met during a visit to Vienna in mid -1780s, possibly due to a recommendation by Franz Anton Hoffmeister.

Stylistics and works

The chamber works obtained show through a trained on the model of Joseph Haydn's musical language, with a catchy melody and contrapuntal skill for the interested music lovers play and understandable, and comparable with similar compositions of his contemporaries Joseph Bengraf, Franz Anton Hoffmeister and Paul Wranitzky. Grills early death and his employment in the small provincial city of Sopron prevented a more sustainable broad impact; nevertheless likely his compositions to a not inconsiderable popularity have pleased because there were copies of his compositions not only in the well-known center of contemporary musical life (Vienna, Munich, Dresden, Berlin, Paris, London), but even in Naples, Oslo and Uppsala.

Almost all of Franz Grill surviving works were published in the comparatively short period of 1789-1791, however, are created with safety in part earlier.

In addition Grill wrote two cycles, each with twelve minuets and "German dances " for unknown cast and several smaller piano compositions, such as a " Rondeau et Final in Dis".
