Franz Herterich

Herterich Franz ( born October 3, 1877 in Munich, † October 28, 1966 in Vienna) was an actor, director, and Burgtheater.

Life

After studying art history in Munich Herterich began his career as an actor. About Leipzig, he arrived in 1910 at the New Theatre in Berlin. From 1912 he was a hero performer at the Burgtheater in Vienna and from 1923 to 1930 director of the house. Herterich rendered important services director, his productions of Trojan Women, The Bride of Messina and Libussa were included in the history of theater. His style was characterized by a modern, streamlined practicality. His era as Burgtheater director the appointment of Remigius Geyling as a theatrical director and the addition of the ensemble fell with artists such as Ewald Balser and Werner Krauss. After his departure from the Directorate thankless post he worked from 1932 as artistic director of the "Theatre of Youth".

In the years 1934-1952 Herterich appeared in several feature films. He usually appeared in the role of a ruler or patriarch, including the monumental and Nazi propaganda film Kolberg.

In 1938, he affirmed the " Anschluss " with the following words: "Today, finally, we must not only speak German, but German also think, feel and act. We thank the leader! "

From 1945 to 1957 he held the artistic director at the theater of youth. In 1948 he published his book " The Burgtheater and its mission." On November 28, 1957 Herterich received the Medal of Honor of the Federal capital Vienna. His honorary dedicated tomb is located on the Grinzinger cemetery in Vienna ( group 20, number 4, number 31).
