Franz Krenn

Franz Krenn ( born February 26, 1816 in Droß, † June 18, 1897 in St. Andrew - Woerdern ) was an Austrian composer.

Born in Droß ( Misc Krems ), the son of a school teacher, he received his first music lessons from his father, and later he was taught by his uncle, a pupil of Joseph Preindls, and the pastor of his hometown. After completing the educational course in Krems, he was first an assistant teacher in Weikersdorf, but went in 1834 to Vienna, where he studied composition with Ignaz von Seyfried and several years worked as a piano teacher of Hofsängerknaben.

From 1844, he held several organist, 1862 he was Kapellmeister at St. Michael's Church, which he made in a row into a center of Cecilianism. In 1869 he received besides Anton Bruckner professor of harmony, counterpoint and composition at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, where he worked until 1891. The composer Franz Krenn taught as a professor at the Conservatory of many important musicians, including Gustav Mahler, Hans Rott, Mathilde Kralik, Leoš Janáček, Adolf Wallnoefer, Hugo Wolf and Alexander Zemlinsky.

Franz Krenn died at the age of 81 years in St. Andrae - Woerdern. He is the father of the painter Edmund Krenn ( 1845-1902 ). A plaque for Franz Krenn is located at St. Michael's 6th place in Vienna.

Works

Krenn's very extensive body of work includes 29 trade fairs, two oratorios Boniface and the Four Last Things, a requiem, and a Te Deum, cantatas, smaller sacred works, a symphony in G minor (composed in 1850), string and piano quartets, organ and piano pieces, a further organ school (1845 ), a school singing and teaching a music theory and harmony ( 1890).
