Franz Sacher

Franz Sacher ( born December 19, 1816 in Vienna, † March 11, 1907 in Baden bei Wien ) was an Austrian confectioner; he is considered the inventor of the world famous Sacher Torte.

Life

The history of the Sachertorte begins when the master of the house Metternich Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von Metternich, his royal kitchen in 1832 commissioned to create a special dessert for himself and his high-ranking guests. "The fact that he did not disgrace makes me tonight ," he said. But the chef was sick, and so had - this is at least the legend - the 16 -year-old Franz Sacher, an apprentice in the second year, take on the task. On this day, the Sachertorte was invented.

As out -skilled chef Franz Sacher first made after several years of professional experience in Bratislava and then shortly autonomously on Danube ships between Vienna and Budapest. Sacher returned in 1848 returned to Vienna and opened in Weihburggasse 4 a deli with wine shop, which proved to be the " chocolate cake of Franz Sacher " a bestseller. From 1 December 1865, he led as the owner and the Grand Hôtel de l'Europe in the Leopoldstadt Asperngasse 2 (now Aspernbrückengasse ), which he made in 1871.

Franz Sacher then settled with his family in 1881 in Baden near Vienna, where he on 11th March 1907 in the 1873 built on his behalf residence, a villa in today's sour Hofstraße lived until his death. Buried Sacher is in the family grave at the cemetery in Baden Helen.

Franz Sacher and his wife Rosa had two sons:

  • Edward (1843-1892), when the k.u.k. Hofzuckerbäcker Demel completed the Sachertorte and 1876, Hotel Sacher founded in Vienna
  • Carl (1849-1929), who founded in 1881 Sacher 's Hotel & Curanstalt in Helental. In this today frequented hotel or restaurant many important personalities including Empress Elizabeth were guests.
