Life

Franz Senn, a Ötztal peasant family entstammend, studied after the visit of the Jesuit high school in Innsbruck ( to 1851 ) first four semesters of philosophy in Innsbruck and Munich, then theology at the seminary in Bressanone. In 1856 he was ordained a priest. His haunts were after years as a cooperator in Zams, Serfaus and Landeck of 1860, surrounded by glaciers Vent in the Ötztal, which he developed touristy, 1872-1881 Nauders and in later years also Neustift, where on 31 January he 1884 died and where today, a memorial stone marking the site of his tomb.

When Franz Senn 1860, the curacy of St. Jacob took over as curate and provisor in Vent, he soon realized that the standard of living could be raised only by promoting tourism. His idea was to create trails and paths and to build shelters, at a time when there were hardly any cards of this extensive glacier area. In 1869 he founded in Munich, together with three like-minded German Alpine Association; this was also because it was dissatisfied with the more scientific orientation of the company founded in Vienna in 1862 the Austrian Alpine Club. In 1883 his tuberculosis worsened disease, so he went to rest to Merano. However, he never recovered and died on 31 January 1884.

Senn is sometimes seen as the father of tourism in Tyrol. His birthplace, where he was born on March 19, 1831 in Unterlängenfeld is still today in the Oetztal to visit from the outside. Franz Senn was also a member of the K.D.St.V. Aenania Munich in the CV.
