Franz Susemihl

Franz Susemihl ( born December 10, 1826 in Laage, † April 30, 1901 in Florence ) was a German classical scholar, who was a professor at the University of Greifswald from 1856 to 1898.

Life

Friedrich Franz Karl Ernst Susemihl was born the son of a general practitioner Detlef G. Susemihl in the Mecklenburg town of Laage. After domestic private lessons he attended from 1841 Guestrower cathedral school. Since 1845 Susemihl studied Classical Philology in Leipzig and Berlin. In 1848 he taught as a teacher at Domgymnasium in Gustrow, 1850, he was in casting for Dr. phil. doctorate. 1852 took over Susemihl a job as a substitute teacher at the high school Schwerin and habilitated for classical philology in Greifswald. In 1856 he was appointed there as an adjunct professor in 1863 appointed him to the Pomeranian State University as a full professor. 1875-1876 Susemihl was rector of the University of Greifswald. By 1898, he exercised his teaching at the University, in his last years he devoted himself - almost blind - an Athenian literary history, which remained unfinished. Susemihl died during a vacation trip in Florence at a pleurisy. He was buried in the Protestant cemetery there.

Franz Susemihl acquired primarily in professional circles great reputation as a translator of the works of the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle. His scientific work included already on his 70th birthday about 11,000 printed pages. In recognition of his contributions to the field of classical philology appointed him the Prussian government in 1892 to the Privy Councillor. As the first university professor himself Susemihl also committed since 1874 for the Liberals in the Greifswald city council.

Since 1846 Susemihl was a member of the Corps Misnia Leipzig.
