Franz Xaver Eder

Franz Xaver Eder (* November 4, 1925 in parish churches, † June 20, 2013 in Passau) between 1984 and 2001, the 83rd Bishop of Passau.

Life

A native of the Lower Bavarian Rottalblick Eder began his theological studies after the war and captivity in 1949 in Passau. On 29 June 1954 he was ordained priest. The following year he was prefect at an Episcopal seminary in Passau St. Valentin. In 1961 he was Vicar and the Vicar General Secretary. From 1961 to 1968 he was exempted for studies. In 1965 he became chaplain at the University of Passau and the same year as rector of the Votive Church in Passau. From 1968 to 1978 he served as rector of the seminary of St. Stephen. In 1974 he was appointed to the Cathedral Chapter, which he presided as dean from 1977 to 1984.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on May 6, 1977 Titular Bishop of Villa Regis and Auxiliary Bishop of Passau. In St. Stephen's Cathedral in Passau he received on 16 July 1977 by the then Bishop of Passau, Anthony Hofmann episcopal ordination. Co-consecrators were the suffragans Ernst Tewes from Munich and Karl wing from Regensburg.

On January 26, 1984, he was appointed coadjutor with right of succession. On October 15, 1984, he was the successor to the retired for reasons of age Antonius Hofmann Bishop of Passau. He took over the diocese on 24 November 1984, led until 2001.

Under Bishop Eder, the "Pastoral Development Passau " was (PEP ) set in motion in the Diocese of Passau in 1997. For three years, many bodies, parishes and the priests and the pastoral staff involved in the " Passau pastoral plan ". He was put into effect at Pentecost 2000. " The Pastoral Plan will retain those historically pastoral importance, which is about the " Epistola pastoralis " had gotten the Passau Josephus Cardinal Dominicus Lamberg from 1726. In addition to the episcopate Bishop Eder was a member of the Commission for Spiritual communities and movements, as well as representative of the Episcopal Conference for the contacts with the Eastern Churches.

Episcopal Coat of Arms

The coat of arms is divided into three parts and the right shows a red wolf on a silver background, the " Passau Wolf", the heraldic animal of the former prince-bishops, and left a golden cross on a black background from the diocese of Arms. In three green shamrocks on a golden background for " strength, love, prudence " standing.

His motto was " In the spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind " according to (2 Tim 1.7 EU). Standing behind the shield the golden processional cross, above the green bishop's miter with 12 tassels.
