Franz Xaver Haberl

Franz Xaver Haberl ( born April 12, 1840 in Oberellenbach (now Mallersdorf- Pfaff mountain ); † September 5, 1910 in Regensburg ) was a German church musician and musicologist.

Haberl was born the son of a teacher in Oberellenbach ( Lower Bavaria ). He attended the Episcopal junior seminary in Passau, then studied theology in Munich and received there on 12 August 1862, the ordination.

During this time, Haberl also completed the publication of the fourth volume of the Musica Divina his recently deceased teacher, Carl Proske.

After working as a music prefect at the seminary in Passau, he devoted himself from 1867 to 1870 as organist of the church of Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome in the local archives and libraries musicological studies.

From 1871 to 1882 he served as Director of Music and inspector of Dompräbende in Regensburg in 1874, where he founded the first Catholic church music school, which flourished rapidly under his leadership. 1879 he also founded a Palestrina Club.

During the tenure Haberls appeared as Director of Music under his editorial revisions of the chorale books with close reference to the Editio Medicean of 1614. Papal privilege for printing this edition for printing Pustet 1900 was not renewed because now the research of the Benedictines of Solesmes, the versions the Editio Medicae had proven to be not authentic. Pope Pius X appointed a commission to restore the original readings of the choral chants, the Editio Vaticana, the Editio Medicean then replaced in 1904.

After an extended period of study in Rome, who focused primarily on the preparation of the complete edition of the works of Palestrina, he took over management in 1885 and teaching of the School of Church Music in Regensburg. Since 1889 he edited, founded by Franz Xaver Witt church music magazine Musica sacra and since 1899 also the flying leaves for Catholic church music (later Cäcilienverein organ ).

The friend of Liszt and Lorenzo perosis in 1879 appointed honorary canon of the Cathedral of Palestrina and 1899 elected President of the General German Cäcilienverein. The University of Würzburg in 1889 awarded him an honorary theological doctorate. In 1908 he received the rank of papal prelate house.
