Franz Xaver Richter

Franz ( František ) Xaver Richter ( born December 1, 1709 Holleschau, Moravia, † September 12, 1789 in Strasbourg ) was a Moravian composer and important representative of the Mannheim school.

Life

From 1740 to 1747 was judge as Vice - Kapellmeister in the service of Prince Abbot Anselm Reichlin of Meldegg to Kempten in the Allgäu. During this time six of his symphonies in Paris were published. Since 1747, he was a composer, violinist and singer ( bass) to the famous Mannheim court orchestra of the Elector Karl Theodor. 1769 he followed Joseph Garnier as Kapellmeister of Strasbourg Cathedral, where in his last years Joseph Haydn's most famous pupil Ignaz Pleyel was his deputy. In France he was called François -Xavier Richter. A letter to Leopold Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, according to ( dated November 2, 1778, during the stay of the Austrian composer in the city), he was also known as a heavy drinker.

In his work style characteristics combining Baroque and galant elements. He was one of those masters of the Mannheim school, which were important for the beginnings of pre-classical symphony.

Known students were Carl Stamitz, František Xaver Pokorny, Joseph Martin Kraus and Fränzl Ferdinand ( 1767-1833 ).
