Fray Juan de Torquemada

Juan de Torquemada (* 1557 in Torquemada, † 1624 Mexico City) was a Spanish historian.

Torquemada was a member of the Franciscan Order to Mexico, where he became a pupil of Geronimo de Mendieta. 1615 appeared in Seville his book " Monarquía Indiana ". The work, which deals with the history of the Aztecs under Spanish rule, is primarily a translation of Mendieta "Historia eclesiastica indiana". Nevertheless, it contains sharp criticism of the resettlement program, which forced upon the Spanish administration the Indian communities.
