Fred Bruemmer

Life and work

Bruemmer was born the son of a German - Baltic family in Riga. He came to Canada as a refugee in 1950 and worked in a gold mine in northern Ontario. His photographs and far more than a thousand items - mostly illustrated with his own paintings - have been published in International Wildlife, Natural History, National Geographic, Smithsonian, Canadian Geographic and in many magazines and major magazines in North America, Europe and Japan. An avid nature lover, he was a year up to six months and even longer on the way to intensively study the history of nature and to take photos. Worldwide known is his photo of a weißwolligen harp seals Howler, that was recorded as one of 51 images in the book did Photographs Changed the World and is often used as a logo for animal welfare. So far, 24 books have been published by him and partly translated into many languages. William E. Taylor, director of the Natural Museum of Canada, described in his preface to Bruemmers book The Arctic the work as " the most comprehensive book on the subject that has ever been presented ."

Awards

In recognition of his outstanding achievements for documenting the Arctic region Fred Bruemmer was elected to the circular of the Fellows of the Arctic Institute of North America. The Royal Canadian Institute awarded him the Sandford Fleming Medal. The University of New Brunswick in Canada in 1989 awarded him an honorary doctorate. For his achievements in the field of photography, he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

In 1983, Friedrich was Bruemmer of the highest award of Canada, the "Order of Canada ", awarded.

In 2003 he was awarded by the North American Nature Photography Association their Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2005 he received for his biography SURVIVAL Canada's renowned Mavis Gallant Prize for non-fiction books. The book was published in 2008 in German translation by Klas Lackschewitz under the title " survival - a Flüchtlingsodyssee " and notably reported Bruemmers years in Soviet prison camps.
