Fred Hiltz

Frederick James Hiltz (born 1954 in Dartmouth ( Nova Scotia ) ) is the current Canadian Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada.

Hiltz grew up in his birthplace of Dartmouth and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 from Dalhousie University. In 1978 he achieved his Master of Divinity at the Atlantic School of Theology. Hiltz won the 2002 Honorary Doctorate from the University of King's College, Halifax.

On 3 June 1977 he was ordained as a deacon and on 29 June 1978 he was ordained as a priest. Hiltz worked in various parishes as an Anglican priest in the following years, including Christ Church in Sydney, Melford - Guyborough in Timberlea, Lakeside, The Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax and St. John 's Church, Lunenburg.

He was elected bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Iceland 2002. Since 2006 he is a member of the Anglican- Lutheran International Commission. The Guardian describes him as a bishop with more liberal leanings. Hiltz is a moderate, liberal theologian who provided assistance, including the blessing of same-sex couples at the General Assembly of his church. Hiltz was followed in 2007 as Primate Andrew Hutchison its predecessor.

Hiltz has been married for over 30 years and has a son Nathan, who has worked as a jazz guitarist and music teacher in Toronto.
