Fred Kohlmar

Fred Kohlmar ( born August 10, 1905 in New York City; † 13 October 1969 in Hollywood, Los Angeles ) was an American film producer.

Life

Fred Kohlmar, son of Lee and Mina Kohlmar Wolferman was first PR agent, before he gained as an assistant to Samuel Goldwyn first experience as a film producer. From the late 1930s he worked for several film studios, such as 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures. His repertoire included both film noirs like enemy in the Dark ( The Dark Corner, 1946 ) and movie musicals including Pal Joey (1957) and film comedies like yet available rooms ( The Notorious Landlady, 1962). He worked with a number of major directors, including Joseph L. Mankiewicz, John Ford, George Cukor and William Wyler. In 1956 he was nominated for Best Picture Academy Award for his production of the Columbia melodrama Picnic ( Picnic, 1955) with William Holden and Kim Novak in the lead roles in the category.

With Maxine Marshall Kohlmar was married until his death in 1969. His last production The only game in town ( The Only Game in Town, 1970) was published posthumously. His grave is located in the Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City.
