Fred Lebow

Fred Lebow ( born June 6 1932 as Fischel Lebowitz in Arad, Romania, † October 9, 1994 in New York City ) was a Romanian- American marathon runner, who organized the New York City Marathon and other races in New York City.

From 1970 to 1993 he was the race director of the New York City Marathon. Within a few years he made of these local running event one of the most important marathons in the world.

1990 him a brain tumor was found. In 1992, he fulfilled his last big wish: He ran "his" Marathon along with the nine-time winner Grete Waitz.

Fred Lebow died on October 9, 1994 to cancer, six weeks after it the USA Track & Field Association had added to its Hall of Fame. In his honor, there is a monument near the Tavern on the Green in Central Park, near the finish line of the New York City Marathon.
