Fred M. Wilcox

Fred M. Wilcox ( born December 22, 1907 in Tazewell, Virginia; † September 23, 1964 in Beverly Hills, California ) was an American film director.

Life

Fred McLeod Wilcox was one of six children of optician James Wilcox. Among his siblings was Ruth Selwyn, who married the producer Edgar Selwyn, one of the founders of Goldwyn Pictures. Another sister was Pansy Wilcox Schenck, who married the president of the production company, Loew 's, Inc., Nicholas Schenck.

After attending the University of Kentucky Wilcox worked in the New York public relations office of MGM. In 1929 he was employed as assistant director for King Vidor in the controversial drama Hallelujah. In the aftermath Wilcox worked as a director for test shots for acting talent.

1943 Wilcox led the first time directing a feature film ( nostalgia ). Even with the sequels Lassie - Held on four paws and lassies home he was a director. It turned out that Wilcox could work especially well with children, which he in 1949 with The Secret Garden proof presented, with the Margaret O'Brien became known.

After several B movies for MGM, he returned in 1956 with the science fiction film Forbidden Planet, a movie that influenced the genre sustainable. The following year, Wilcox left MGM to work as an independent producer and director. However, it only worked on another film, I Passed for White with James Franciscus, he completed it in 1960.

Fred McLeod Wilcox passed away on September 23, 1964 in Beverly Hills.
