Frederic Eugene Ives

Frederic Eugene Ives ( born February 17, 1856 in Litchfield (Connecticut), † May 27, 1937 in Philadelphia ) was an American photographer and inventor.

Life and work

Ives began as a printer apprentice at the Litchfield Enquirer and became interested in there for photography. At the age of 18, he was then employed by the photographic laboratory at Cornell University. He dealt first with the development of an additive color copying process - the production of color prints, using a combination of red, green and blue sub-images. Later he focused on the construction of their own recording and viewing equipment. Being developed since 1890 and 1895 have placed on the market " Photochromoscope " system consisted of camera and projector and was the first commercial application of the additive method.

In Ives go back a total of 70 patents, including the halftone photogravure.
