Frederic Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham

Frederic Herbert Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham, of Hartfield in the County of Sussex, Baron Maugham, of Hartfield in the County of Sussex PC KC ( * October 20, 1866, † March 23, 1958 ) was a British lawyer who most recently as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, due to the Appellate jurisdiction Act as a life peer was also a member of the House of Lords in 1876. In the meantime, he served 1938-1939 as Lord Chancellor one of the highest legal offices of the English legal system and received in 1939 beyond the inheritable title ( Hereditary peerage ) of Viscount Maugham.

Life

Lawyer and judge

Maugham, son of a working in Paris Solicitor and older brother of the playwright and narrator William Somerset Maugham graduated, after visiting the Dover College to study law at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge and received in 1890 his legal approval to the Chamber of Lawyers ( Inns of Court ) of Lincoln 's Inn. He then began working as a barrister and was honored for his lawyer's services in 1913, first Attorney-General (King 's Counsel ) and 1915 so-called " Bencher " the Law Society of Lincoln 's Inn.

In 1928, Wright judges the Chamber for Economic Affairs ( Chancery Division ) to the Commissioner for England and Wales High Court of Justice, and held this office of judge until 1934. At the same time he was defeated in 1928 Knight Bachelor and led since then the additional name "Sir". Upon completion of this activity took place in 1934 judge his appeal to the judge ( Lord Justice of Appeal ) at the Court of Appeal, which is responsible for England and Wales Court of Appeal, where he worked until 1935. In addition, he was appointed to the Privy Councillor 1934.

Lord Justice, House of Lords Member and Lord Chancellor

By Letters Patent of October 7, 1935 Maugham was due to the Appellate Jurisdiction Act appointed in 1876 as a life peer with the title Baron Maugham, of Hartfield in the County of Sussex, a member of the House of Lords to the nobility and worked until first his death in 1938 as Lord Justice (Lord of Appeal in Ordinary).

On March 9, 1938, Lord Maugham of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in place of Douglas Hogg, 1st Viscount Hailsham Lord Chancellor of Great Britain (Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain ) appointed and held this post until his replacement by Thomas Inskip, 1st Viscount Caldecote on 3 September 1939.

For his many years of service to him the hereditary title ( Hereditary peerage ) of Viscount Maugham, of Hartfield was awarded in the County of Sussex on 22 September 1939. On 5 October 1939, Viscount Maugham Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in turn and held that post as Lord Justice until his resignation on July 18, 1941.

From its closed on December 17, 1896 marriage to Helen Mary Romer, a daughter of the future Lord Justice of Appeal Sir Robert Romer and sister of the later Lord of Appeal in Ordinary Mark Romer, Baron Romer four children, including his only son Robin Maugham that his legacy as 2nd Viscount Maugham was after his death, during the life peerage as Baron Maugham went out with his death.
