Frederic Morton

Frederic Morton ( born October 5, 1924 in Vienna as Fritz Mandelbaum ) is an American writer of Austrian origin.

Life

Fritz Mandelbaum grew up in the Thelemangasse in Vienna Hernals and went to the high school Hernalser Geblergasse.

The house in the Thelemangasse and three adjoining houses were owned by his family, the Hardware manufacturers were. The family business was founded by his grandfather Bernard Mandelbaum, who forged for Emperor Franz Joseph I. medals. With the Nazi invasion of 1938 and the " Anschluss " to the German Reich in 1939, the Jewish family had to go into exile in England, since 1940 she lived in New York. In America, arrived the father of Fritz Mandelbaum changed its family name to Morton. Frederic Morton was launched in 1951 after the war as an American correspondent temporarily returned to Vienna. He later worked among others for the New York Times and the magazine Esquire.
