Frederick Bedford

Sir Frederick George Denham Bedford KCB (* January 1, 1838; † January 30, 1913 ) was a British admiral of the Royal Navy and Governor of Western Australia.

Biography

Bedford came in 1852 in the Royal Navy Midshipman in 1854 and in 1859 Lieut. After subsequent promotions to Commander in 1871, to Captain in 1875, he later took a number of leading positions in the Navy. In 1889 he was first Fourth Sea Lord, before he then was from 1892 to 1895 commander in chief of the naval station at the Cape of Good Hope. After its replacement by Harry Rawson, who later became Governor of New South Wales, he became in 1895 second in succession to Lord Walter Kerr Sea Lord and held so by the Secretary of the Navy ( First Lord of the Admiralty ) and the First Sea Lord is the third most important function in the Royal Navy.

1899 Lord Walter Kerr followed him again as Second Sea Lord, while he was the successor of Admiral John Fisher commander in chief of the naval station for North America and the West Indies in Bermuda itself.

He was last on March 24, 1903 Governor of Western Australia. He continued in this function more than six years until 23 April 1909.
