Frederick Christian, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth

Friedrich Christian of Brandenburg- Bayreuth ( born July 17, 1708 Weferlingen; † January 20, 1769 in Bayreuth) was Margrave of the Frankish Principality of Bayreuth, Danish and Prussian lieutenant general and imperial General Feldzeugmeister.

Life

Friedrich Christian was the son of Margrave Christian Heinrich of Brandenburg- Kulmbach and his wife Christiane Sophie (1667-1737), daughter of Albrecht Friedrich, Count of Wolfstein ( 1644-1693 ). Friedrich Christian was the uncle of his predecessor Frederick ( who died without male offspring) and brother of the Margrave Georg Friedrich Karl. He came from the Kulmbach - Bayreuth branch of the younger line ( Wefer Linger line) of the Franconian Hohenzollern.

Friedrich Christian was considered a nerd and black sheep of the family. At the time of the death of his nephew, he lived in retirement as a Danish Lieutenant General in Wandsbek in Hamburg and was not prepared for government tasks in the Principality of Bayreuth.

After the government takeover in 1763 in Bayreuth, he tried to stabilize the disordered finances. He reduced drastically the court. Most artists (such as Carl von Gontard ) went to Berlin at the court of Frederick the Great. Almost all construction work on the palaces and gardens came to a halt. Bayreuth sank back into provincialism.

Friedrich Christian died without male descendants, so that the Principality of Bayreuth went to the Ansbach branch of the family.

On June 6, 1731, he was awarded the Danish king with the elephant - Order. He was also since March 1763 Knight of the Black Eagle and Knight of the Order of the White Eagle.
