Frederick G. Donnan

Frederick George Donnan ( born September 5, 1870 in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), † December 16, 1956 in Canterbury, Kent, England ) was a British chemist.

He studied from 1889 Chemistry and Physics at Queen's College in Belfast. In 1893, he went to a stint in John Wislicenus at the University of Leipzig. In 1896 he was phil Wilhelm Ostwald in Leipzig Dr.. doctorate. 1896 to 1897 he was a member of Jacobus Henricus van ' t Hoff in Berlin from 1898 with William Ramsay at University College London.

Donnan 1903 Lecturer ( " Lecturer" ) for organic chemistry at the Royal College of Science in Dublin; From 1904 he was professor of physical chemistry at the University of Liverpool. From 1906 to 1913 he was director of the Muspratt Laboratory, from 1913 to 1937 he was professor of chemistry at University College London.

He is considered the co-founder of physical chemistry in England and delivered significant contributions to colloid chemistry, via osmotic processes and the theory of solutions.

In 1911 he described the Donnan equilibrium ( also Donnan effect, Gibbs - Donnan effect, Gibbs - Donnan equilibrium, Donnan law ).

After Hitler took power in Germany in 1933, Donnan intensive care to emigrate, and persecuted German scholars and gave many of them a temporary home at his institute.
