Frederick G. Payne

Frederick George Payne ( born July 24, 1904 in Lewiston, Maine, † June 15 1978 in Waldoboro, Maine ) was an American politician and from 1949 to 1952 governor of Maine. Between 1953 and 1959 he represented this state as a Senator in Congress.

Early years and political rise

After primary school, Payne attended until 1925, the Boston Bentley School of Accounting and Finance, where he studied accounting and budgetary system. After that, he was responsible for their finances at various theater companies in Maine and New Hampshire. Since 1935, Payne was also politically active. In that year he was elected mayor of Augusta. This office he held until 1941. In 1940 he applied unsuccessfully for the post of Governor of Maine. During the Second World War he was with the air forces of the U.S. Army.
