Frederick II (Archbishop of Cologne)

Friedrich von Berg- Altena (c. 1120; ? † December 15, 1158 at Pavia) was when Frederick II 1156-1158 Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

Life

He was a son of Count Adolf II of Berg ( c. 1095, † 1170 ) and his second wife Irmgard, daughter of Engelbert von Schwarzburg and niece of the Archbishop of Cologne, Frederick I of Schwarzburg (?). He was a brother of Archbishop Bruno III. of a mountain, a nephew of Archbishop Bruno II von Berg and an uncle of Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne.

Belonging to the cathedral chapter, Frederick was from 1140 to 1156 and provost of St. Georg in Cologne. Selected in disputed 1150 election as bishop of Utrecht, this was by Conrad III. not accepted and Friedrich not confirmed as bishop. The bishops Albert I of Meissen and Otto of Freising had traveled to support him in that, to prevail against Hermann von Horn.

In May 1156 it was in Cologne to a disputed episcopal election. While the Prior College Bonner Provost Gerhard von Are chose, chose the younger canons Friedrich von Berg archbishop. Finally, the two parties fought three days before the Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in Nuremberg, which then moved its decision on a new day in Regensburg. Here he confirmed him as the new Archbishop of Cologne, gave him at once the regalia and sent it directly to the episcopal consecration to Rome, where he was in 1157 by Pope Adrian IV confirmed.

Friedrich was considered an educated man who has won for its friendliness and kindness the hearts of many people. So writes the Xanten dead book about him that he was a prince of the highest humanity.

He got life faithful to the emperor and accompanied him on the Second Italian campaign. On it he died on December 15, 1158 in Pavia at the consequences of an unfortunate fall from his horse. He was buried in Altenberg monastery.
