Frederick III, Duke of Lorraine

Friedrich III. ( in France called Ferry ) (* 1238, † December 31, 1302 ) from the House Châtenois was Duke of Upper Lorraine from 1251 to his death. He was the only son of Duke Matthew II and Catherine of Limburg.

He was not yet thirteen years of age when his father died, leaving his mother led the regency for him the first few years. In 1255 he married Margaret of Navarre, daughter of Theobald I, King of Navarre and Count of Champagne, and Margaret of Bourbon.

This marriage led to the rapprochement between France and Lorraine. This connection was reinforced when the daughter ( Joan I of Navarre ) of his brother ( Henry I. ) his wife Margaret in 1284 Philip the Fair, the future King of France, married.

During his reign he fought against the Bishop of Metz, to Pope Clement IV excommunicated him and created the Duchy under interdict.
