Frederick Robe

Frederick Holt Robe, CB (* 1801, † April 4, 1871 ) was a British major general and the fourth Governor of South Australia.

Military career

Frederick Robe joined the Royal Staff Corps in 1817 as an ensign in before he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1825 and was transferred in 1827 to the 84th ( York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot and the 87th Foot in 1833 with the rank of captain. In 1846 he was appointed Major. In the years 1840/41 Robe fought in Syria and Military Secretary was in Mauritius and Gibraltar.

Governor of South Australia

On October 25, 1845 robe was sworn in as Governor of South Australia. He was very unpopular. Among other things, Robe was designed as a breach of trust to introduce a special tax on the raw materials of the province for the UK. This decision was also rejected by the South Australian Legislative Council. After the end of his term robe was ordered back in a different position to Mauritius.

Last years

In 1848 Robe was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) and rose in 1854 to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1862 the appointment to major general followed. Robe died on April 4, 1871. Was named after him, the South Australian town of Robe.
