Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby

Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby KG, GCB, GCVO, PC ( born January 15, 1841 in London, England; † June 14, 1908 in Holwood in Hayes, Kent, England), until 1886 known as Sir Frederick Stanley and from then until 1893 as Baron Stanley of Preston, was 1885-1886 colonial Secretary ( Secretary of State for the Colonies ) and 1888-1893 Governor General of Canada. He became famous by the foundation of the later named after him Stanley Cups in 1892, which became the most coveted award of hockey. This Stanley Cup was donated at the suggestion of Lord Kilcoursie under the original name " Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup".

Life

The son of a politician and Prime Minister Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby went into politics after he had studied at Eton and at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst at Eton College.

He briefly served as an officer in the Grenadier Guards, but the important role his family in British politics soon led him into political life. He was a Conservative Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons and Member of the Cabinet. On 31 May 1864 he married Lady Constance Villiers, a daughter of George Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon. Together they had ten children.

From 1878 to 1880 he was Minister of War and 1885/86 Colonial Secretary in conservative governments. 1886, his older brother had now inherited from the deceased father the title of Earl of Derby, he was made as Baron Stanley of Preston to the peer.

In his tenure as Governor General of Canada Stanley travels a lot through all parts of the country. He learned to appreciate the unspoiled nature of the west and discovered the fishing itself as a hobby. Domestic political controversies he held out largely. This coined the Office of the Governor General for future incumbent.

In the last year of his tenure, he donated the Stanley Cup, then for the best amateur hockey team the country. Since 1926, the trophy of the National Hockey League will be awarded to the winner of the professional league.

Baron Stanley's term as Governor General of Canada should end in September 1893. However, died in April of this year his brother, Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby. He inherited him as Earl of Derby. As a result, Stanley left on July 15, 1893 Canada and returned to Britain.

With his family back in the UK, he soon became Lord Mayor of Liverpool, and the first president of the University of Liverpool. During the last years of his life he increasingly devoted himself to philanthropic tasks. Lord Stanley died on 14 June 1908 and Lady Stanley on April 17, 1922.

After Edward Whymper in 1901 as the first Stanley Peak ascended, he named the mountain after Lord Stanley. Likewise, the Stanley Park in Vancouver, where a statue of Stanley is named. Frederick Arthur Stanley was a member of the Federation of the Freemasons, his box, the Royal Alpha Lodge No. 16 is located in London.
