Frederick Townsend Ward

Frederick Townsend Ward ( born November 29, 1831 in Salem, Massachusetts, † September 21, 1862 in Ningbo, China) was a native of the United States adventurer and officer of the American Merchant Marine.

Life and work

Ward, who has fought in different parts of the world as a mercenary, is mainly known for his leading role in the fight against the Taiping and the Taiping Rebellion in China ( 1851-1864 ). He achieved high positions within the Chinese army and died of a wound. He had no children and after his death largely forgotten.
