Breeding history

The breed originated during the Baroque period through the intersection of Spanish and Neapolitan stallions and mares of light Danish country shock. With the Federiksborger should be bred primarily a versatile riding and driving horse that was suitable both as a showpiece for ceremonies as well as for military purposes. At this time, the, also known as the Dane Fredrik Borger was a coveted ceremonial horse at court ceremonies. Over the white stallion Pluto, who was born in 1765, is the co-founder Fredrik Borger of the Lipizzaner and the Danish Mother of Polkan co-founder of the Orlov trotter.

1560 Fredriksborg castle was built in 1562 and founded by King Frederik II of Denmark, the Royal Stud at the nearby monastery Esrom. Already in 1602 the stud was, however, moved to Sparepenge where the master of the horse Freiherr von Haxthausen responsible for the quality of the breeding material. 1720 the stud was moved a second time, this time to Hillerödsholm. After the bankruptcy of Denmark (1813 ) an attempt was made to preserve the race by a Umzüchtung to moderate half- blood. However, this failed because the race thus lost their original character.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, various attempts to regenerate the old breed type. Due to the now low residual stocks, however, this proved to be extremely difficult. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Fredrik Borger has not yet been fully consolidated again. According to estimates by a breeder, there are only about 50 horses (from about 3000 Frederiksborgern ), which are directly derived from the original type. Due to the still low level of residual stocks of breeding animals, the breed is considered as the genetic heritage of Denmark.
