Fredrik Pacius

Fredrik Pacius ( born March 19, 1809 in Hamburg, † January 8, 1891 in Helsinki ) was a German composer, who was mainly active in Finland.

Life

Fredrik Pacius who actually Friedrich Pacius was called, attended the grammar school of Johanneums in Hamburg and studied music in Kassel (including with Louis Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann - coinciding with the later virtuoso violinist Ferdinand David). After that he worked as a violinist in the Royal Court Orchestra in Stockholm. In 1834 he was appointed professor at the University of Helsinki, where he worked until 1867 as " music teacher " ( de facto musical director). He was instrumental in building the Finnish musical life by founding among others, a symphony orchestra and a student choir and conductor, was very active. 1848 Pacius composed the choral song to Vårt country Johan Ludvig Runeberg Our country " Ensign steel ", as Maamme Finnish, Estonian and a Mu isamaa as Min izāmō the Livonian national anthem was later. In 1852 he composed the first Finnish opera with a libretto by Zacharias Topelius in Swedish: Kung Karls Jakt, Finnish Kaarle - Kuninkaan metsästys, German Hunt of King Charles, whose action takes place on the Swedish-speaking belong to Finland Åland Islands.
