Fredrika Bremer

Fredrika Bremer ( born August 17, 1801 at the Good Tuorla Piikkiö, † December 31, 1865 at Castle Årsta, Haninge municipality ) was a Swedish writer and initiator of the Swedish women's movement.

Life

Fredrika Bremer comes from the upper middle class and could afford large early trips. In addition, it was also set very social and voluntary work in Stockholm.

In Stockholm she became friends with Frances Lewin, who became familiar with the ideas of Jeremy Bentham, James Mill and his son John Stuart Mill. 1831 she met Per Johan Böklin, who introduced them in Greek philosophy, but particularly in Platonism. During this time she also addressed with the German Romantics. She stood in a lively exchange with Mary Howitt who translated many of her works into English. In Louisa Alcott's Little Women is read aloud from Bremer.

Her social commitment and their ideas lead to the 1884 founding of the Fredrika -Bremer- Förbundet (German Fredrika -Bremer- association ), which became the nucleus of the Swedish women's movement.
