Fredy Schmidtke

Fredy Schmidtke ( born July 1, 1961 in Cologne Worringen ) is a retired German racing cyclist.

Career

Fredy Schmidtke completed after school training as a pipe fitter and then undertook for four years in the army, where he came in the athletes group. He was 1977 and 1978, two -time German Youth Champion. In 1979, he won even five national titles and finished the year in Buenos Aires Junior World Champion in the 1000 -meter time trial. With the German season he won bronze.

In 1982, he won the world championship in the same discipline. 1979, 1981 and 1982 was Schmidtke Vice World Champion in tandem race of amateurs, in each case together with Dieter Giebken. 1983 occupied the two together in third place; Schmidtke was outclassed for doping with ephedrine. This decision was, however, by the International Cycling Union Cycliste Union revised in November of the same year Internationale (UCI ). In 1984, Schmidtke part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he won the gold medal in the 1000 -meter time trial.

After the Olympic victory Schmidtke neglected the training. In 1985 he was at the German Championships in Mannheim only tenth and was dropped from the national team. He ended his career and opened a sports shop. In 1988, he attempted a comeback, but was only finished eleventh at the German Championships in Stuttgart. After the end of the sports career Schmidtke worked for a subsidiary of Bayer.

Schmidtke started for the SG EC / Bayer Cologne - Worringen (now SG Köln- Worringen ).
