Free Standards Group

The Free Standards Group is founded in 1998, independent, nonprofit organization that aims to strengthen the use of free and open source software through the development and dissemination of appropriate standards. The best-known project of the Free Standards Group is the working group of the Linux Standard Base.

The Free Standards Group are currently focused on the following main tasks:

  • Development and improvement of existing standards
  • Development and implementation of testing and certification programs to promote these standards
  • Enforcement of the LSB labels with distributors and programs

The Free Standards Group is supported by many companies in the Linux environment, including, among others, Red Hat, Novell, Mandriva, Progeny, Turbo Linux, Red Flag Software and Miracle Linux, Beijing Co -Create Software Company, Sun Wah Linux, Thiz Linux, IBM, Intel, HP, AMD, Dell, Sun Microsystems, Veritas Software, BakBone Software, Google, Qt Software and MySQL.

Working groups

In addition to the working group of the Linux Standard Base, there are other working groups that deal with standardization. The group OpenI18N working on a base for linguistic internationalization of programs and distributions to turn easier to locate them later. The Working Group Open Printing deals with the demands of professional printing solutions such as management, reliability, security, scalability, etc., while the group Accessibility defined standards to allow access to Linux systems, including disabled people.

Others, some smaller working groups to deal with each other segments to the overall topic of standardization of Linux.
