Freeboard (nautical)

The freeboard referred to in the water the distance between a water level and a higher edge of a building, usually the top of a dam or bank. In shipbuilding, the freeboard is the height of the hull above the water level, see: ship dimensions.

According to DIN 4048, the freeboard is defined as the distance between the so-called highest water level and the lowest point of a building crown, which should not be bathed. The freeboard must therefore be sized large enough. In dams, the maximum flood ( just the highest water level or the design water level ) may not lead to overflow of Absperrbauwerkes ( dam dam ) lead to exclude a building failure safely.

In addition to the calculated after flood hydrographs required freeboard height reserves for wind and Eisaufstau, for waves and a safety margin to be provided.

Properly it is called " freeboard "; colloquially but is often " the freeboard " said.

In the sea ice research freeboard is the height of the projecting out of the sea water portion of an ice floe (without snow cover ) and is used for the quantification of sea ice cover scientific parameters.
